McLaws's Civilian Careers — Grand Army of the Republic 1886
Lafayette McLaws delivered an address on The Maryland Campaign to open a series of lectures in 1886. The Grand Army of the Republic organized the program which included northern and southern leaders. This marked the beginning of his last civilian career. McLaws wrote numerous articles and delivered lectures throughout the remainder of his life. "Eighty-three of the one hundred-thirteen post-War letters found" in the Southern Historical Collection are "dated between 1886 and 1897." (1)

Confederate artillerist E. P. Alexander wrote a strong letter of recommendation to the committee on July 19, 1890 stating,
"I have always, since the war, spoken of him as, perhaps the very best Division Commander with whom I was ever brought in contact - for the thorough organization and discipline of his Division, for the care of his men, and for his untiring personal zeal and energy in the study of the ground around him, and in his foresight and preparation for all contingencies. I know of few men better qualified for executive authority, both from personal character, ability and dignity, and from long and extensive experience." (2) Edward PorterAlexander

McLaws noted in a July 17, 1890 letter to the Commission's secretary John T. Dickinson, that he
"would be glad to be appointed as one of the Executive Committee and on such others so as to be kept employed constantly under pay, as misfortunes have come to me. which deprives me of a home, and I am at present out of employment." (3)

While McLaws was elected to the executive committee, his service was cut short when he:
"refused to place an 'R' beside his name demonstrating a Republican Party affiliation" in 1893. (4)
