Gail Miller Deloach is the visual materials archivist at the Georgia Department of Archives and History. Gail was instrumental in securing permission for two of the images used in the book. More importanly, we also received permission to use the pen-and-ink image of McLaws on our masthead as a result of Gail's help.

The pen-and-ink sketch of Lafayette McLaws as he appeared between 1861 and 1865 is courtesy of the Georgia Department of Archives and History.

May 11, 1975 - a rain-drenched morning on the campus of Texas A & M University in College Station, Texas -- Mother's day no less. And for Texas Aggies, the day after the Corps of Cadet's seniors passed in their Final Review. In the early afternoon, the clouds departed, the sun was bright, and the most important event of my life took place in the All Faith's Chapel. We are approaching 27 years since Kathy and I officially became a team. Even before our marriage, we worked together as students -- Kathy handled the graphic design and marketing materials for bringing political speakers to campus. I handled the operations. Today, it's still the same. We quit counting when Kathy passed 6,000 images created for the Web. We have now produced more than forty-five online educational courses for corporate and non-profit clients, and even a few websites. Kathy's goal has always been to WoW someone with what she can do. Somehow, she found the extra time to build this website and you are beginning to see the result of her efforts--and the WoW factor is beginning to set in.

In June, 1985 a third member joined our little clan. Clayton, completing his high school sophomore year, has given up many evenings and weekends with his father. We have found new topics to discuss. We also learned a great deal more about our national history. Most importantly, we grew to understand how difficult it must have been for Lafayette McLaws to be separated from his sons and daughter for years at a time. Clayton is looking forward to a career in the military, so perhaps he has also gained a small appreciation for the sacrifices our men and women in uniform make.
