April 16, 1861 - Appointed Major of Infantry, ordered to Savannah, Georgia for duty with Brigadier General Alexander Robert Lawton
April 18, 1861 - Major, reported to Lawton as an assistant quartermaster and commissary, Savannah, Georgia
April 26, 1861 - Major, relinguished staff duties and assumed command of Thunderbolt Point
June 17, 1861 - Appointed Colonel to report to 10th Georgia
June 24, 1861 - Accepted Colonel, SO No. 79 reported to Brigadier General John Bankhead Magruder at Yorktown, Virginia to assume command of the 10th Georgia Infantry
September 25, 1861 - Brigadier General commanding 1st Brigade of the Army of the Penninsula

May 23, 1862 - Major General commanding division under Magruder, Army of Northern Virginia
September 4 - 22, 1862 - Major General commanding his own division and that of Major General Robert H. Anderson in attack on Harpers Ferry and his own division at Antietam, Army of Northern Virginia
September 23,1862 - December 16, 1863, Major General commanding his own division, Army of Northern Virginia
 
1863
December 17, 1863 - Lieutenant General James Longstreet relieves McLaws of division command, McLaws demands court-martial
 
1864
January 21, 1864 - SO No. 21 directs seven-member court-martial board to assemble in Russellville, Tennessee on February 3, 1864.
February 13, 1864 - Court-martial convenes, then adjourns
February 15, 1864 - Court-martial convenes, then adjourns
March 13 - 17, 1864 - Court-martial convenes, deliberates, and makes report
May 7, 1864 - SO No. 107 directs McLaws to rejoin division as commander, Army of Northern Virginia
May 18, 1864 - SO No. 115, issued on instructions from Jefferson Davis, directed McLaws to report to Major General Samuel Jones in Charleston, South Carolina to command the defenses of Savannah, Georgia
September 1864, Lieutenant General William J. Hardee assumed command of the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida
December 20, 1864, McLaws helped oversee the evacuation of Savannah, Georgia
 
1865
April 10, 1865 - General Joseph E. Johnston assigns McLaws to command of the Military District of Georgia that is not included in the Department of Tennessee and Georgia
May 11, 1865 - published Johnston's surrender as last official act
