| Civil
War Round Table meetings, battlefield tours, educational seminars,
telephone conversations all important and powerful tools
to help us gain a better understanding of the Civil War. Yet,
these powerful tools have serious limitations. |
 |
Speakers
do most of the talking at meetings and seminars leaving
little if any time to discuss interesting or fascinating
topics. Once you leave a meeting or seminar follow up
is difficult, even with email. |
 |
Battlefield
tours, Round Table meetings, and seminars require people
to be in the same place at the same time. |
 |
Battlefield
tours and educational seminars can be expensive with travel
spanning several days required. |
 |
Telephone
conversations require people to be connected at the same
time. Because we are all busy people, we often play a
vigorous game of telephone tag before we can be connected
at the same time by the telephone. |
 |
Meetings,
tours, seminars, and telephone conversations leave, at
best, jotted notes which are usually incomplete and often
hard to find. |
|
| Alternatives
also have their own limitations: regular mail is slow, express
mail is expensive, and email may be lost, accidently deleted,
or not filed appropriately. |
|
| A
Soldier's General uses computer
conferences to help overcome some of these limitations
and build a community of individuals interested in selected
parts of the Civil War. Computer conferences, similar to bulletin
board systems, store information sent by one person so that
it can be retrieved later by many others. When one person posts
a question in a conference, many people can respond. Unlike
telephone conversations, which are usually one-to-one, computer
conferences are many-to-many a tool for communities of
interest. We even send you email when new messages are posted
to topics that your are interested in; or, the entire message
to which you can reply. |
| We
invite you to participate in discussions hosted by A
Soldier's General. You have the ability to create
your own topics and participate in other public topics. You
can easily search the differenct conferences to find information
important to you. |
| You
can participate in one of two ways.
|
 |
Guests
have the ability to read all of the public discussions. |
 |
Registered
members can read and participate in each of the public
or private discussions to which they have access. You
only need to complete a short form with your name, password,
and email address to Register and begin participating
in our discussions. |
|
| We
welcome you to A Soldier's General and encourage you
to help us develop our new Civil War community. Unlike other
systems that refer to users as subscribers, we think of you
as contributors. Your questions and answers contribute to our
historical understanding of one of the most important events
in our nation's history. |
