Oeffingers.com, the organization that operates A Soldier’s General, is the sole owner of the information it gathers on its site. Oeffingers.com will only share your information with outside parties in ways that are described in this privacy statement or if we are required to do so by law or in the good-faith belief that such action is necessary in order to conform to the edicts of the law, cooperate with law enforcement agencies, or comply with a legal process served on our Web site.
What Information is Collected and How it is Used?
How to Join in our Discussions and Chats
We collect contact information such as your name and email address to become a registered participant in discussions and chats. You have the option to provide additional information in your individual profile. This information may contain: your web site, a brief personal description about yourself, your favorite URLs, and your picture. You can delete the optional information at any time by clicking on your Preferences Button. Discussion participants can elect to have new messages sent to their email address by enabling discussion subscriptions. To unsubscribe from specific discussions, login to the discussions and update your preferences.
Contact Us
We use email links located on the Contact us page and other areas of the site to allow you to contact us directly with any questions or comments you may have. We read every message sent in and try to reply promptly to every one. We want to respond directly to your questions or comments. We may also file your comments to improve the site and program, or review and discard the information. Your personal information will not be shared with third parties unless you give your explicit permission.
Purchasing a Book
We use the Wells Fargo eStore application to enable book purchases. You provide specific personal information during the purchase of books from our site. The information includes: your name, address, e-mail address, telephone number, and payment information. We may also collect certain non-personal information including the type of browser you are using (e.g. Netscape, Internet Explorer), the type of operating system you are using (e.g. Mac OS, Windows 95, Linux) and the domain name of your Internet service provider (e.g. America Online, Earthlink). We use the information you provide about yourself to fulfill your order, to respond to your inquiries about your order and to notify you about the status of your order.
Newsletter
Individuals may subscribe to one of two monthly email newsletters. "In The Trenches" is our monthly newsletter for the Civil War Community. You will find current Civil War Roundtable summaries, Civil War Battlefield preservation activities and alerts, How-To information, and book reviews. "Roll Call" updates you on activities taking place in our electronic community such as chats, selected discussion topics, and new content on the site. Your email address is used to send you these emails. To unsubscribe from the either of the monthly newsletters, click on the unsubscribe link in one of the newsletters.
Logged Files and Cookies
A Soldier’s General logs IP addresses and browser types for systems administration purposes. These logs will be analyzed to improve the value of the materials available on the website. A user’s session will be tracked, but the user will be anonymous. We do not link IP addresses to any personally identifiable information. To enhance your experience with our site, many of our web pages use "cookies" and shopper ID’s. Cookies are text files we place in your computer’s browser to store your preferences. Cookies, by themselves, do not tell us your e-mail address or other personal information unless you choose to provide this information to us. However, once you choose to furnish our site with personally identifiable information, this information may be linked to the data stored in the cookie. We do set a cookie for registered participants in our chats and discussions.

Oeffingers.com contracts with three third parties to assist us in managing certain functions on our Web site, such as sending out our newsletters. Discussions and Chats
